Based on David's best selling book Building Classroom Communities: Strategies for Developing a Culture of Caring, this 4-part course brings theory and practice together to guide you in creating a unified and caring classroom where all students feel a sense of belonging. Developed from David's experiences in a variety of school settings, this course will provide specific strategies for: • Creating emotionally safe classrooms • Encouraging honor and respect • Facilitating a sense of interdependence and generosity • Teaching empathy as a primary social skill • Preventing bullying and other forms of low-level aggression
In this class, we will explore how children often communicate through their behaviors. If the learning environment does not meet a student's emotional needs, the behaviors of defiance and low-level forms of aggression will often result. David will present the blueprint for decoding student behaviors while creating an emotionally safe learning environment that is conducive to student achievement and motivation. He will highlight the relationship skills of feedback and high-level listening and how to integrate those skills into one's daily practice. Participants will learn how to establish rapport with their students through the creation of "Quality World" experiences (Glasser), as they apply the ideas from the class into their daily interactions with all people in their lives both personally and professionally.
Empathy is a heart skill that promotes understanding, connection and community. This introductory class by educator and author David Levine, will explore the “energy” of empathy as the foundation for creating emotional safety, optimism and hope for the young people in our schools. Through storytelling, song and honorable reflection, David will guide participants to an increased awareness of self and others as they explore the life-changing practice of empathic intention.
